Casa Velha do Palheiro *****
The Casa Velha do Palheiro was built in early 19th Century as a hunting lodge for the Count Carvalhal and was bought in public auction in 1885 by John Burden Blandy. The Casa Velha ("Old House") was restored in 1997 and opened on 1st May 1997 as Madeira's first five star Country House hotel.
Today the Casa Velha has three seperate buildings: The "Old House", with public areas, 3 "Junior Suite Main House" and 7 "Double Main House" rooms; the "Garden Wing" with 14 "Double Garden Wing" rooms and the "Golf Wing", overlooking the golf course, which houses 3 "Senior Suite Golf Wing", 10 "Double Golf Wing" rooms and a sitting room.
Nestled in the hills to the east of Funchal, Casa Velha do Palheiro is bordered by renowned Palheiro Gardens - With Cantenary trees - and the Championship Palheiro golf course - included in the "TOP 200 Golf Courses in Continental Europe" of the Golf World magazine.
